Climber Profile

Stahl Brothers
One big Stahl and one little Stahl The Stahl Brothers climbed extensively at Joshua Tree in the 70’s and 80’s, and did some of the first climbs and ventures into Queen Mountain. Their step-dad John Wolfe was one of the original Desert Rats, and wrote the first guidebook to JTree. He took the boys to Joshua Tree often when they were in their teens.

Their enthusiasm and spirit of adventure was contagious, and their circle of friends was vast and impressive. Dave and Rob Stahl were the nucleus for many a wild adventure, and if you joined them, you were an “honorary” Stahl brothers. Needless to say, there were many friends who called themselves “Stahl” brothers.

Their stilly antics, pranks and partying earned them a trickster reputation. New Year’s Eve Stahl Brother parties at Joshua Tree were the place to be. A massive Chablis glass, dubbed “the baby” was filled with various foul strange liquors and passed around the campfire, a sort of communion of brotherhood, friendship, adventure and camaraderie. They were great, bold climbers, and good friends.

Whenever they were around, there was big fun and hard climbing.

The Stahl Brothers are both married and have families of their own, but still continue their legacy of adventure gathering every now and then at Joshua Tree, and there are always lots of Stahl “brother” to share a rope or a campfire with.Another Stahl
