Desert Skies

When city people come to the desert, one of the most powerful sights they see and talk about is the desert sky. First of all, the stars in the desert are quite different then the stars that city people see; we just don't have the city lights to wash out the star light. The desert sky during the day can be so blue that it almost looks fake and painted on. Many city skies have their blues diluted by smog, moisture, dirt, and lights. During the summer monsoons, the clouds and the thunder and lightning storms put on a show that is second to none. When moisture does occasionally make it over the mountains to us on the rain shadow side, the sun heats up the earth and moist air and the air raises into huge cumulus thunderheads. With the desert blue as a backdrop, most clouds are proudly showpieced and highlighted, and seem more magically here in the desert then other places on earth. The Mojave sunrises and sunsets flaunt their beauty time and time again, taking our breath away, and thrilling us with their power and grace. The desert sky takes on many faces, is usually always a surprise, and continues to impress, entertain, and bless us. ( Photos by Blitzo)
