The Tusk is a cool little pinnacle near the road just past the East entrance to the Park out of 29 Palms. There are 5 routes on The Tusk, and it's fairly easy to get to the top to set up top ropes. There is one bolt at the top of Black Rhino, so you need to back it up with trad pro.. All the rest of the climbs, you need to set your own pro, and extend over the edge on which ever climb you wish to do. There are a few cracks on top, so take some stoppers, and a small selection of cams (small to large...mostly med.). Be careful scrambling to the top... it's a short 4th class scramble, but
a little exposed, and you can't afford to fall...(it's really easy, though). if you are really afraid to solo up the easy front side to set up anchors, there are a few
available placements to lead the 4th class pitch if need be. |
