Derrick Reinich
Derrick is a local in many ways. Not only does he live in the High Desert (presently in Newport Beach, formerly Yucca Valley), he has done over a thousand climbs (local definition of a local). He grew up in the High Desert and went through school here. He is probably the most prolific, well-traveled and
accomplished climber to come from this area, and the only climber who grew up here to have done a thousand routes.
A skier and motorcycle racer in high school, Derek was used to going for it. Climbing was another adrenaline squirt for him, and he took to it with confidence
and competence right away. Mishaps in skiing and motorcycle racing can be as unforgiving as climbing. Derek climbed very well without being reckless, unusual in many young climbers whose egos often time override common sense. Being smart, safe and focused, Derek tore it up and climbed often. He
traveled often, building on his experience, talent, and knowledge.
Balancing climbing, college, work, and social life seemed to be a challenge for Derek, often times giving in to his climbing addiction and social life agenda. After a long journey and various colleges, Derek got his degree and presently focuses on sporatic climbing trips and work. Derek is a friend and well respected by all. He is friendly, fun, talented and a great climbing partner. He's done everything from excellent first ascents, 5.12 sport climbs, big walls, classic trad climbs, mountaineering, to desert towers. He was a guide for Jackson Hole Mountaineering as well as working at a climbing gym in Red Rocks, Nevada, and knows the Vegas climbing areas well.
He has compiled a very awsome and impressive climbing resume. Still in his mid twenties, this is a testament to his focus, drive, talent, and love of climbing, adventure and travel.
